Climacium americanum Moss in Terrariums

Moss Name: Climacium americanum Moss

Common Names: American Climacium Moss

Moss Type: Carpeting Moss (Pleurocarpous)

Climacium americanum, is a popular choice for terrariums because of its soft, feathery appearance.

Climacium americanum, also known as American Climacium moss, is a species of moss that is native to North America. It is found in moist woods and shady areas, and it grows in tufts or mats on the ground. The leaves of C. americanum are oblong-lanceolate, and they are arranged in spirals on the stems. The leaves are green and have reddish-brown tips. The spores of C. americanum are produced in capsules that are borne on stalked structures called sporophytes. When the sporophytes mature, the capsules rupture, releasing the spores into the air. These spores then settle on moist surfaces, where they germinate and form new moss plants.

This moss is easy to care for and does not require much light to thrive, though it does need consistent moisture. This moss can be an excellent addition to any terrarium, and with proper care, will thrive for many years.

Ideal Conditions for Climacium americanum Moss in Terrariums

Lighting: Requires little light to survive. It can grow in shady areas, such as beneath tree canopies. In fact, too much sunlight can damage the plant.

Growing Medium: When growing American Climacium moss, it is important to use a loose, well-draining growing medium such as sphagnum peat moss. This will help to ensure that the roots have access to the moisture and nutrients they need without becoming waterlogged.

Temperature: This moss is tolerant of a wide range of temperatures, from -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit) to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). It can also tolerate brief periods of drought.

Watering: Climacium americanum is a moisture-loving woodland moss and is not drought-tolerant. Keep it consistently damp; it browns quickly if allowed to dry out.

Humidity: Moss enjoys a high humidity environment.

Caring for it: like all terrarium moss, Climacium americanum wants high humidity, bright indirect light, gentle airflow and consistently moist, never waterlogged, conditions. For the full method see our guide to caring for moss in terrariums.
