The Earth Star is a flattened, ground-hugging bromeliad whose wavy-edged leaves form a striking star, often flushed pink, red or bronze. Its bold shape makes a perfect terrarium focal point.

Light

Bright, indirect light intensifies the pink and red tones; low light leaves it dull green.

Water & humidity

Keep lightly moist. It has small, shallow roots and dislikes being waterlogged.

In the terrarium

Its compact rosette and love of humidity suit terrariums well. Nestle it among moss and stone as a colourful centrepiece; it stays small and won't sprawl.

Tip: After it flowers, the mother rosette slowly dies but produces offset 'pups' around its base β€” replant these to continue.

Common problems

  • Faded colour = needs brighter light.
  • Rotting centre = water pooled in the crown; water the substrate, not the rosette.

Frequently asked questions

Are Earth Star bromeliads good for terrariums?

Yes β€” they're compact, colourful, humidity-loving and stay put, making them excellent terrarium focal plants.

How do I water an Earth Star?

Water the substrate and keep it lightly moist; avoid letting water sit in the central rosette, which can cause rot.
