Type: Carnivorous | Size: Compact, 5 to 6 inches

Venus Fly Traps are great for terrariums open and closed. Venus Fly Traps don’t require too much humidity but do generally like a humid environment. Open terrariums work particularly well with Venus Fly Traps.

How to grow and care for Venus flytraps

Venus flytraps come from a tiny stretch of wet, sandy savanna in the Carolinas of the south-eastern United States, not the tropics. That origin explains almost everything about their care: they evolved with blazing sun, poor acidic soil, wet feet in the growing season, and a genuinely cold winter.

Best terrarium setup for Venus flytraps

An open or vented terrarium suits a flytrap far better than a fully sealed one. They need strong light and good airflow, and a closed jar that traps warm, still air encourages rot and weak, floppy traps. A shallow open container or a bog planter that sits in a tray of pure water works best, ideally near a bright window or under a grow light.

Light

As much bright light as you can give. In good light the trap interiors flush deep red and the plant stays compact; in low light the leaves grow long, pale and lax, and traps stop forming. A minimum of several hours of direct sun, or a strong LED grow light close overhead, keeps them healthy.

Temperature and dormancy

This is the make-or-break factor. Flytraps need a cold dormancy of around three to four months each winter, ideally between 2 and 10 degrees C, when growth stops and old leaves die back. Skipping dormancy year after year slowly exhausts the plant. In the growing season they are happy at normal warm room temperatures, roughly 20 to 30 degrees C.

Watering

Only ever use rainwater, distilled water or water from a reverse-osmosis filter. Tap water minerals build up in the soil and kill them within months. Keep the pot standing in a shallow tray of that pure water during the growing season so the peat stays wet, then ease back to just-damp over winter dormancy.

Humidity

They like humidity but do not need a sealed environment; 50 percent or more is plenty. Good airflow matters more than very high humidity, so do not chase 90 percent in a stuffy closed jar.

Feeding

Outdoors and on an open sill they catch their own insects and never need feeding. Indoors you can drop a live or freshly killed insect, such as a small fly or a rehydrated bloodworm, into an open trap every few weeks. Never feed meat from your kitchen, and do not trigger traps for fun: each trap only closes a handful of times in its life before it dies.

Common mistakes to avoid

The three classic killers are tap water, no winter dormancy, and rich potting mix or fertiliser, all of which burn the roots or slowly starve the plant of its rest. A fourth is poking the traps repeatedly, which wastes the plant's energy. Keep it simple: pure water, lean peat-and-sand soil, lots of light, and a cold winter.

Is Venus flytraps right for your terrarium?

The flytrap is the carnivore everyone wants, and it rewards you with the most famous trap in the plant world. The catch is dormancy: it is a temperate bog plant, not a tropical one, so it does best in a bright open terrarium or an unheated windowsill bog rather than a warm sealed jar kept at room temperature all year. Give it its cold winter and a single plant can live for decades.
