Perfect Grip: Terrarium Tweezers and Grabber Tools

Long terrarium tweezers and tool kit
Long tweezers are the most useful terrarium tool.

Ask any terrarium builder for their one essential tool and most will say the same thing: a good pair of long tweezers. Terrarium tweezers and grabbers let you place plants, moss and stones precisely at the bottom of a deep vessel, without muddying the glass or crushing delicate leaves.

Why ordinary tools won't do

Terrariums are built through small openings, so your hand simply won't reach, and standard tweezers are too short and blunt. Long, slender terrarium tweezers (25–30 cm for most jars, longer for bottles) give you both reach and a delicate grip. Curved-tip tweezers are worth seeking out: the angle lets you tuck plants into corners and press moss down flat against the substrate.

The rest of a good set

Tweezers usually come in a kit with a few companions worth having: spring scissors for trimming roots and pruning growth, a scoop or funnel for adding substrate cleanly, and a tamper (or flat grabber) to firm soil and press plants in. Aquascaping tools from the aquarium aisle work perfectly and are often better made.

Where to buy

Look for a complete terrarium tool kit rather than tweezers alone, see the picks in our best tools guide.

FAQ

What length tweezers do I need? Long enough to reach the base of your vessel, 25–30 cm for most jars, 40 cm+ for tall bottles.

Straight or curved tips? Curved are more versatile for planting into corners and pressing moss; many kits include both.
