Though it looks like a lush, feathery moss, Spikemoss is actually a primitive fern ally. It forms a soft, spreading emerald carpet and demands the high humidity a closed terrarium provides.
Light
Bright, indirect light. It scorches in direct sun and thins out in deep shade.
Water & humidity
Must stay constantly moist — Spikemoss crisps up rapidly if it dries, and unlike true moss it rarely recovers from a full dry-out.
In the terrarium
A superb carpeting plant for closed terrariums, where the sealed humidity keeps it plush. The golden 'Aurea' form adds a bright chartreuse groundcover.
Common problems
- Browning, crispy fronds = it dried out or humidity dropped.
- Pale, sparse growth = too much light or too little humidity.
Frequently asked questions
Is Spikemoss a real moss?
No — despite the name and mossy look, it's a spikemoss (a fern ally). It needs the same high humidity as moss, though.
Does Spikemoss need a closed terrarium?
Effectively yes — it needs constant high humidity, which a sealed closed terrarium supplies far better than open air.
