Black Glass Geometric Terrarium

Terrarium Creations ยท 2021

Few terrarium vessels look as striking as a black geometric glass terrarium โ€” all clean brass-black lines and faceted panels, like a tiny architectural greenhouse. It's an elegant, beginner-friendly way to start your first terrarium, and the dark framing makes whatever you plant inside pop.

Open or closed? It changes what you can grow

Most geometric terrariums have panelled openings or a hinged door, which makes them open (or semi-open) terrariums โ€” they let air circulate rather than sealing in humidity. That matters for what will thrive inside:

  • Open geometric terrariums suit dry-loving plants: succulents, cacti and air plants, which rot in trapped moisture.
  • Sealed geometric terrariums (with a tight-fitting door) can hold humidity for moss and small ferns โ€” just expect some condensation on the glass.

Not sure which you have? If air can pass through the seams, treat it as open and plant succulents. Our guide to open vs closed terrariums breaks down the difference in full.

How to start your geometric terrarium, step by step

  1. Drainage layer โ€” 2โ€“3 cm of LECA or fine gravel at the base, since these vessels have no drainage hole.
  2. Barrier + charcoal โ€” a thin layer of activated charcoal keeps things fresh and stops soil washing into the drainage.
  3. Substrate โ€” cactus/succulent mix for an open build, or a moisture-retentive mix for moss.
  4. Plant & landscape โ€” set your largest plant first, then fill around it and finish with stones or sand.

Work through the panelled opening with long tweezers โ€” the narrow doors are the one fiddly part of a geometric build.

Caring for a geometric terrarium

Keep it in bright, indirect light โ€” direct sun through angled glass can scorch plants and overheat the interior. Water lightly and only when the substrate is dry (succulents perhaps every 2โ€“3 weeks); for a mossy sealed build, a light mist is usually enough. Wipe the inside of the glass occasionally so those crisp black lines stay the star of the show.

Frequently asked questions

What plants go in a black geometric terrarium? For open designs, succulents, cacti and air plants. For sealed designs, moss and small tropical ferns.

Do geometric terrariums need drainage? Yes โ€” because they have no drainage hole, always start with a gravel or LECA layer to keep roots out of standing water.
