Not every terrarium is meant to look like a lush jungle. TerraLiving's The Dystopian takes the opposite tack, a preserved-moss sculpture built to look like a crumbling, post-apocalyptic building reclaimed by nature. It's one of their most striking pieces of botanical art.

The concept
The Dystopian layers multiple moss species over sculpted cork bark arranged to create see-through layers that read like the skeleton of a ruined structure, nature slowly taking a city back. Like all of TerraLiving's work it's made from ZERO Moss: real moss, freeze-dried and preserved so it's biologically inactive and completely maintenance-free.

How preserved moss art is cared for
Because the moss is preserved rather than living, a piece like this needs no water and no light to survive. Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp and extreme temperatures, and it holds its look for years. (More on how this works in our note on caring for moss.)
Where to buy
The Dystopian and TerraLiving's other botanical sculptures are sold directly on their webstore in limited runs. To try the dark, mossy aesthetic yourself, combine preserved moss with cork bark in a dark glass vessel.
Frequently asked questions
Is The Dystopian alive? No, it's made from preserved (freeze-dried) real moss, so it doesn't grow and needs no care.
Where can I buy it? Directly from TerraLiving's website; pieces are made in limited numbers.
