Air Purifying Plant Kit with Air Plants

Terrarium Creations ยท Updated August 2026

Air plants (Tillandsia) are some of the easiest, most sculptural plants you can own, no soil, no pot, just a living form you can perch anywhere. They're often sold as "air-purifying," so it's worth being straight about what they can and can't do.

Do air plants really purify the air?

Honestly? Only a little. The idea traces back to NASA's 1989 Clean Air Study which found houseplants could remove some airborne compounds, but that was inside small, sealed chambers, and much of the work was done by roots and soil microbes (which air plants don't have). More recent reviews, including from the American Lung Association conclude that in a real room you'd need an impractical number of plants to meaningfully change air quality. So enjoy air plants for what they genuinely are, beautiful, low-effort greenery that lifts a space, rather than as a substitute for ventilation or an air purifier.

Why air plants are still brilliant

  • No soil, no mess they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves, so you can display them almost anywhere.
  • Endlessly versatile in a hanging holder a shell, a geometric frame or an open terrarium.
  • Hard to kill get the watering right and they thrive on neglect.

How to care for air plants

The one thing they do need is water. Soak them in room-temperature water for 20โ€“30 minutes about once a week then shake off the excess and let them dry fully upside down (trapped water rots the base). Give them bright, indirect light and good airflow. That's genuinely it.

Where to buy air plants

You can buy live air plants singly or in variety packs, and pair them with a display holder. More ideas in our curated shop.
