A wooden lid turns an ordinary glass vessel into a proper closed terrarium and it looks wonderfully organic doing it. A solid wooden ball or disc resting over the opening seals in humidity so a miniature world of moss and ferns can largely look after itself, while adding a warm, natural contrast to the clear glass.

Why a lid changes everything
The moment you cap a planted terrarium, it becomes a self-sustaining water cycle. Moisture evaporates from the soil and leaves, condenses on the cool glass, and trickles back down, the same rain cycle that keeps our planet green, in miniature. That's why closed terrariums need watering so rarely. A snug wooden lid does this job while still lifting off easily whenever you want to tend the plants or let out excess moisture.
What to grow under a sealed lid
Sealed, humid conditions suit tropical, moisture-loving plants: moss small ferns, fittonia, baby tears and other jungle-floor species. Avoid succulents and cacti, they rot in the trapped humidity. Browse our plant library for closed-terrarium-friendly options.
How to plant it
- Drainage gravel or LECA at the base.
- Charcoal a thin layer of activated charcoal keeps the sealed air fresh.
- Substrate & plants a moisture-retentive mix, then your moss and ferns.
- Seal & observe pop the lid on. A little condensation is healthy; if the glass fully fogs, leave the lid off for a day.

Frequently asked questions
Does the lid need to be airtight? No, a resting wooden lid is perfect. Terrariums actually benefit from a tiny bit of air exchange, so a snug (not sealed-shut) lid is ideal.
How often do I water a lidded terrarium? Rarely, often only every few months, once the internal water cycle is balanced. Water only if condensation stops appearing.
