Light

It needs lots of light, bright indirect with some direct sun, to keep its compact rosette shape and colour. In low light it stretches and loses form.

Water & humidity

Let the gritty, free-draining mix dry out completely between waterings, then water at the base (not over the rosette). It stores water in its leaves and rots easily if kept damp.

In the terrarium

An open-terrarium and dish-garden plant only. The humidity of a closed build will rot it, so display it with other succulents in a bright, airy, fast-draining setup.

Tip: Water the soil, not the rosette, moisture trapped between the leaves causes rot.

Origin & temperature

Echeveria elegans is native to the semi-desert rocky slopes of Mexico, adapted to bright sun and long dry spells.

Temperature: warm and tolerant of a wide range, about 10โ€“27ย ยฐC; protect from frost. Pet safety: Echeveria is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Propagation

Propagate from offsets or from whole leaves laid on dry mix, which form roots and a new rosette at the base.

Common problems

  • Stretched, spaced-out leaves = too little light; give it a sunnier spot.
  • Mushy, translucent leaves = overwatering; let it dry fully between waterings.

Good companions

Mexican Snowball pairs well with plants that want the same conditions, an open, bright, low-humidity setup (a succulent or air-plant terrarium). Here are some species that thrive alongside it:

Frequently asked questions

Is Echeveria suitable for a closed terrarium?

No, like all succulents it needs dry, airy conditions and rots in a humid closed build. Use it only in open, sunny terrariums.

Why is my Echeveria stretching out?

Not enough light. Echeverias need bright light (some direct sun) to stay compact; move it somewhere brighter.
