Bertolonia is a true terrarium jewel plant, low, velvety leaves in deep green marked with silver or pink and flushed purple beneath. It craves humidity so high that it's almost impossible to grow well outside a terrarium.

Light

Bright, indirect light keeps the markings vivid; direct sun scorches the delicate foliage. An east- or west-facing aspect, filtered, is ideal.

Water & humidity

Keep the substrate constantly moist but never waterlogged, easing off a little in the cooler months. Avoid splashing the leaves and use soft water where possible.

In the terrarium

This is a closed-terrarium specialist. It needs the steady 70–80% humidity and warmth (around 22–25 °C) that a sealed vessel provides; in open room air it quickly wilts and drops leaves.

Tip: Warmth matters as much as humidity, keep it above about 18 °C and out of cold draughts.

Origin & temperature

Bertolonia maculata is native to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil, hugging the deeply shaded, constantly humid forest floor.

Temperature: warm, around 22–27 °C, and kept above 18 °C. Pet safety: not known to be toxic, but best kept out of reach of pets.

Propagation

Propagate from stem or leaf cuttings under very high humidity, or from its fine seed. Cuttings root slowly, so keep them warm, moist and covered.

Common problems

  • Wilting or leaf loss = humidity dropped; it needs a sealed, humid environment.
  • Faded markings or scorch = too much direct light; move to bright, filtered light.

Good companions

Bertolonia pairs well with plants that want the same conditions, a humid, closed terrarium with bright, indirect light. Here are some species that thrive alongside it:

Frequently asked questions

Why is Bertolonia considered hard to grow?

It demands constant high humidity and warmth that ordinary rooms can't provide. Inside a closed terrarium, though, it's far more manageable.

Is Bertolonia a good terrarium plant?

It's one of the best true jewel plants for a closed terrarium, compact, colourful and perfectly suited to the humid, stable conditions.
