Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal, though it happily tolerates lower light too. Keep it out of direct sun, which scorches the fronds.

Water & humidity

As an epiphyte it wants an airy, fast-draining mix (orchid or epiphyte blend) kept evenly moist, not soggy. It's salt-sensitive, so use rainwater or distilled water where you can.

In the terrarium

A relaxed choice for medium and larger terrariums. It likes the humidity but its rhizomes appreciate air movement, so give it a roomy or well-vented build rather than a tiny sealed jar.

Tip: Never bury the fuzzy golden rhizomes, let them creep across the surface as they do in the wild.

Origin & temperature

Phlebodium aureum is native to the tropical Americas, from Florida down through Central and South America, growing as an epiphyte on tree trunks and decaying logs.

Temperature: 16โ€“24ย ยฐC. Pet safety: non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Propagation

Divide the rhizome, making sure each piece carries roots and a frond or two, and lay it on damp substrate. Keep humidity high while the divisions settle.

Common problems

  • Brown, crispy fronds = air too dry or direct sun; raise humidity and filter the light.
  • Leaf-tip burn = mineral build-up from hard water; switch to rain or distilled water.

Good companions

Blue Star Fern pairs well with plants that want the same conditions, a humid, closed terrarium with bright, indirect light. Here are some species that thrive alongside it:

Frequently asked questions

Is the Blue Star Fern easy to grow?

Yes, it's one of the more forgiving ferns, tolerating a range of light and the odd missed watering better than most.

Can I grow it in a closed terrarium?

It loves the humidity, but the rhizomes prefer some airflow, so a larger or well-ventilated terrarium suits it better than a small sealed jar.
