Named for the furry, silver-brown rhizomes that creep over the surface like little paws, the Rabbit's Foot Fern pairs an unusual texture with delicate, lacy fronds, a favourite for open terrariums and mounted displays.

Light

Bright, indirect light suits it best; a north- or east-facing aspect is ideal. Direct sun scorches the fine fronds.

Water & humidity

As an epiphyte it takes moisture from humid air, so let the surface dry slightly between waterings rather than keeping it sodden. Crucially, never bury the furry rhizomes, they must sit on top of the substrate or they rot.

In the terrarium

Best in an open or well-ventilated terrarium where the creeping rhizomes can sprawl across hardscape. It loves humidity but the exposed rhizomes need air movement, so it's happier in an open build or large planted vessel than a tightly sealed jar.

Tip: Let the rhizomes wander over driftwood or stone, that creeping habit is the whole appeal, and they'll root down as they go.

Origin & temperature

Davallia fejeensis hails from Fiji and the South Pacific islands, where it grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks and branches, its furry rhizomes creeping over bark.

Temperature: 16–24 °C; frond drop sets in below about 13 °C. Pet safety: non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Propagation

Propagation is easy: cut a section of rhizome that carries at least one frond, lay it on damp substrate and pin it in place until it roots. Don't bury it, just keep the contact point moist.

Common problems

  • Rotting rhizomes = they were buried or kept too wet; lift them onto the surface and let the top dry between waterings.
  • Frond drop = cold or a sudden dry spell; keep it above ~13 °C and humidity high.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grow a Rabbit's Foot Fern in a closed terrarium?

It enjoys the humidity but the furry rhizomes need airflow to avoid rot, so an open or well-vented terrarium suits it better than a fully sealed one.

Should I bury the furry 'feet'?

No, the rhizomes must sit on top of the substrate. Buried, they rot. Pin them to the surface and they'll root down naturally.
